5 Questions to Ask Your Jeweler Before Choosing an Engagement Ring to Maximize Your Investment

Many people dream about their proposal, imagining where it will happen, what their partner will say, and what the ring will look like.

There is no wrong way to propose as long as you and your partner are in love, but nailing the ring is a great place to start!

Here are 5 questions we encourage you to ask your jeweler to maximize your investment when choosing an engagement ring.

QUESTION 1: SETTING QUALITY

Is the setting ready-made or custom made for the stone? If it’s ready-made, what can you tell me about its production quality?

When settings aren’t custom-made for each special and unique stone, it can lead to inadequate light hitting the stone for reduced sparkle or a poor fit.

QUESTION 2: RING SIZE

Is this design setting sizable?

Some settings are quick and simple to resize, while others need to be completely remade. This can cost thousands of dollars.

For settings that cannot be sized, you’ll want to be 100% sure of her ring size prior to placing an order. Luckily, the Proposal Prep Couples Box and Diamond Try-on Kit come with professional-grade ring sizers!

QUESTION 3: FUTURE UPGRADE OPTIONS

Do you offer a trade-in program if we want to upgrade our ring down the road?

You never know what the future holds! Even if you think you *might* want to upgrade in the future, it’s worth asking now what that may look like.

QUESTION 4: DIAMOND GRADING

Is the diamond GIA-graded?

The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) has the most well-respected and rigorous diamond grading standard in the industry. They use the 4 Cs (color, clarity, cut and carat weight) to individually grade each stone. We recommend prioritizing a GIA stone for an engagement ring.

QUESTION 5: PAYMENT OPTIONS

Is there any price advantage to paying by check or wire instead of credit card?

Jewelers love this question and are likely to work with on price if you’re willing to forgo the credit card points. No harm in asking!
